MĀNUKA HONEY AND YOUR SKIN
Published on 01 Feb, 2022
Mānuka honey has been proven to be beneficial for topical usage – as the natural compounds found in the honey are antimicrobial, hydrating and nourishing.
These properties mean the honey is suitable for use on a range of skin types, including acne-prone, dry, ageing, sensitive or otherwise irritated skin.
Mānuka honey has antimicrobial activity in the form of unique chemicals such as methylglyoxal (MG). The MG and the other antimicrobial activity are often referred to as its Unique Manuka Factor (UMF®) activity. These antimicrobial compounds aid in killing bacteria found on the skin, while the osmotic nature of the honey simultaneously draws out further unwanted bacteria.
The honey also boasts a variety of vitamins, amino acids and minerals to calm and soothe irritated skin. Mānuka honey is also a natural humectant – so it draws moisture to the surface of the skin to retain and hydrate.
We recommend applying the honey 1-2 times per week as a face mask or use as a cleanser daily for 30 seconds before gently washing off.
Please consult your medical professional before usage.
